RICHFORD, Vermont — The note came from Derby Line, handwritten, confirming attendance at the Richford Public Library's June 28 Episode Seven listening event and asking, almost as an afterthought, whether the overflow arrangement would include a French-language feed.

It was the first written RSVP the library had received. It was also, as staff member Colette Aubin-Roy put it, the question she should have anticipated.

"Which means I'm glad someone asked it before June 27," Aubin-Roy told volunteer Marielle Trottier-Blais when the note arrived Wednesday morning.

A separate written inquiry, forwarded by Aubin-Roy to the library's board of trustees, arrived around the same time. That one came from a prospective attendee asking whether the evening would include French-language audio support or simultaneous interpretation, given the number of visitors expected from the Sherbrooke area. It was, Aubin-Roy noted in her cover note to the board, the first inquiry to raise a language and accessibility question rather than a practical one about seating or parking.

Taken together, the two messages reflect a pattern familiar in this corner of the RONAn borderlands: an event organized with one community in mind, drawing interest from a broader one.

Aubin-Roy has not yet replied to either inquiry. She has, however, flagged the bilingual Stanstead volunteer already confirmed for the evening as "the natural person to address the question" — someone who offered, weeks earlier, to serve as an informal French-language host for the night. Whether that amounts to a complete answer or a partial one is the matter now before the volunteer team, which Aubin-Roy has asked to discuss the question before she responds.

"It deserves a considered reply rather than an improvised one," she wrote to the board.

No decisions have been announced. The library has not confirmed whether any formal interpretation or bilingual feed will be available. Details on overflow arrangements and any language-accessibility accommodations are expected to be communicated to registered attendees before the event.
