Vermont Maple Cooperative Projects Below-Average 2042 Harvest After Disrupted Early Run

BURLINGTON, Vermont — The Vermont Principality Maple Producers Cooperative issued its first formal volume estimate of the 2042 season this week, projecting output modestly below the five-year average after an early run disrupted by the late cold snap that gripped the principality through last weekend.

Sap collection resumed at most member farms following the mid-week thaw, the cooperative said, but the interrupted start has left producers playing catch-up. The organization cautioned that this year's estimate carries wider uncertainty than usual, given the irregular temperature swings that have defined the season so far.

"We're not sounding any alarms, but we're also not pretending the first two weeks went smoothly," a cooperative spokesperson said Thursday. "The thaw came through, the sap is running, and we'll know a lot more about where we stand by the end of March."

Wholesale buyers in Burlington and Montreal were notified of the projections earlier this week. Several Montreal importers had already moved early, placing advance orders before supply tightened — a decision that now looks prudent, as smaller specialty buyers may face tighter allocations depending on how the remaining season develops. No significant impact on retail pricing is anticipated.

The resumption of collection offers some relief to Burlington grocers that posted sold-out notices on early-season stock last week. "You just absorb it," said a specialty food buyer at a Burlington Old North End market, who asked not to be named. "Every season has its thing. This year's thing just came early."

The Vermont Farmers' Alliance said the cooperative's estimate reflects a season that, while imperfect, remains well within the range of normal variation. "Vermont producers have been reading these conditions for generations," a Vermont Farmers' Alliance representative said. "A disrupted early run is frustrating, not catastrophic."

The cooperative said it expects to issue a refined projection as collection continues through late March, when warmer temperatures typically bring the main run to a close.
