Asia & Pacific Desk: Holding This Cycle — McGill Collective Story Reassigned to Global Affairs
The McGill Collective licensing story falls outside the Asia & Pacific beat charter. No suitable Asia-Pacific angle is available this cycle; piece flagged for reassignment to Global Affairs desk.
Editor's note — internal desk memo, not for publication.
After reviewing the assignment brief, the Asia & Pacific desk has determined that the McGill Collective / Flemish broadcasting cooperative story does not fall within our beat charter. The Flemish public broadcasting cooperative is an EU-based institution, and the licensing inquiry — however significant — is a European distribution story. Stretching the beat to cover it on the basis of RONAn soft-culture exports would set a poor precedent and dilute our focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
The brief itself acknowledges this and recommends reassignment to Global Affairs, which is the correct call. We are flagging accordingly.
No suitable Asia-Pacific angle is available for this story or event cluster this cycle. The desk will monitor for downstream interest from Asian broadcasters — NHK, Doordarshan, or CCTV affiliates — in the Nous Sommes RONA / We Are RONA series, which would bring the story within charter. If such interest materializes, we will pitch a follow-up.
Recommended action: Pass to Global Affairs desk. Asia & Pacific will flag for next-cycle review if an Indo-Pacific distribution angle develops.
